For years, Indians living on the plains of America hunted buffalo as their primary source of meat. Other parts of the animal were used for a variety of purposes. Read moreĀ http://bit.ly/13h4x43

Then there were the Eastern bison, that not many people even know about now, because they were almost wiped out by 1800 and the last were killed in 1825. (Along the river system where I grew up, actually.) Virginia apparently now claims there never were any there, all evidence to the contrary.

(So many extinctions. When you even feel a need to kill all the parakeets, you have a serious problem.)

Thankfully there were still whitetail deer and elk. (Though the elk also got totally wiped out and they later had to reintroduce a subspecies from the Rockies into the Appalachians. With vrry mixed luck.) So that wasn’t as devastating as on the Plains. But a lot of Eastern Siouan people in particular also relied pretty heavily on buffalo before. And deer/elk skins just aren’t big or thick enough to make good boats to use where there are a lot of rapids that can be hard on a wooden hull. :/

People are also having to keep herds of the Plains subspecies now, but I’m glad more and more are able to do it. I miss being able to get the ethically sourced meat, where I’m living now.
